More Buying Second Homes

The number of people owning or considering owning a second home has rises in the UK. Out of those surveyed 10% already had a second home and 14% were thinking of buying another property.

Most bought a second property for buy-to-let purposes. Around a third of people purchased a second home for private use and 7% let their second property as holiday homes.

The South East of England was the most popular choice of location followed by the South West.

Second Homes

According to recent press stories people owning second houses are about to be outlawed by locals who object to outsiders pushing up property prices and buying up property for holiday homes.

Some people in Cornwall, the Lake District and France have experienced trouble with locals ranging from unpleasant emails to ransacked houses.

In actual fact people owning second homes are still a small minority of buyers.

Although in Wales some locals are upset about the number of people buying homes the situation is nothing like the trouble of the 1970’s when people owning holiday homes had them set alight.

Holiday home rentals see surge in demand Interest in renting a private holiday home soared in January as travellers increasingly opt for privacy, flexibility and self-catering facilities for their holiday, a rental firm has announced.

Holiday-Rentals.co.uk said that it had seen a 40 per cent surge in the number of enquiries about holiday homes in January, with more than 60 per cent of people expected to choose a self-catering holiday this year.

The firm said that the main reason travellers were giving for choosing holiday home rentals was the privacy, followed by the self-catering facilities, then the flexibility offered.

Research from the website revealed that the most popular destinations among those looking for summer sun were the old favourites Spain, France, Italy and the Canaries, although Malta, Morocco and Montenegro also proved popular.

The website also claimed that it was seeing a trend for more travellers staying in the UK for their holiday, with England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales all seeing a higher than average number of enquiries per property per month.

Managing director of Holiday-Rentals.co.uk Alexis de Belloy said: "Not only does renting a private property provide more privacy, space and flexibility than alternative accommodation, but booking online direct from the owner can also cost ten to 40 per cent less than booking through an agent."
